Knowing when your Eames Lounge Chair was made can tell you a lot about its value, authenticity, and the best way to care for it. Herman Miller has made changes to the chair over the decades, and those changes left behind clues you can use to date your chair. Here is how to tell which version you have.


Version 1:  1956 - 1960

If you own one of these chairs, you are part of the lucky few.  Enjoy and cherish your chair.

  • Silver circular cushion clips

  • 100% down cushions filling

  • Boot glides to ottoman base (pre '57)

  • Three (3) screws to armrests

  • Round Herman Miller label

  • Brazilian rosewood veneer

  • Gun stock oil finish


Version 2:  1960 - 1971

A great vintage chair with some slight adjustments from the original, but still a rare find.

  • Silver circular cushion clips

  • Down cushions + other materials

  • Adjustable/screw glides to ottoman base

  • Two (2) screws to armrests

  • Round Herman Miller label

  • Brazilian rosewood veneer

  • Gun stock oil finish


Version 3:  1971 - 1991

1970 Models are still vintage but no longer have the down cushions.

  • Long black cushion clips (Oct '71)

  • Foam and fiber fill cushions

  • Adjustable/screw glides to ottoman base

  • Two (2) screws to armrests

  • Long black Herman Miller label

  • Brazilian rosewood veneer

  • Lacquer finish since 1980


Version 4:  1991 - Today

You have great taste and have bought an iconic piece of furniture.  

  • Long black cushion clips

  • Foam and fiber fill cushions

  • Adjustable/screw glides to ottoman base

  •  Two (2) screws to armrests

  • Long silver Herman Miller label

  • Walnut, cherry or Santos Palisander veneer (2006)

  • Lacquer finish
